Media: Rust and charcoal on watercolor paper
January 2008

I absolutely hate this painting. Rust was a disaster to work with in such large amounts, it doesn't allow me to be as detail-oriented as I would like. Hopefully I'll update it later, work on it and take a better pic.

Inspiration from:

Back-story (long): This is the skyline of St. Paul, one of my most favorite views in the entire world with the Lowertown Depot building in front of it, (I didn't include the words). I got the idea to do this when my dad's good friend lost his house due to forclosure. He used to work in the 1st Bank building. We went to his house and helped him pack, he was wasted. He was so different from before, just defeated. When dad was in the garage getting something, his friend just turned to me and said: "This is my house. I've had it for 20 years and now it's gone."

I thought about how downtown St. Paul, and the rest of the country seems to be going through a state of decay. Everyone is losing their jobs, most of the buildings downtown are empty. I thought about how each empty window represents a face of someone who was affected by the troubled economy, and from that thought, made this.

Did I just paint something with a somewhat personal and relevant meaning behind it? Oh snap, I think I did.

I absolutely love this! The concept and the atmosphere is great! Too bad the detailing didn't work out for you, it would've been even cooler then. You could have done some grayish/rustish clouds in the background to make it look even better. ;)
